Two significant wildfires are currently burning in California, with the Sandy Fire in Simi Valley spreading to 1,364 acres and prompting the evacuation of over 10,000 homes.
High winds initially fueled the fire, though they eased later on Monday.
Meanwhile, a separate wildfire on Santa Rosa Island, part of the Channel Islands National Park, has burned 14,600 acres since it was first reported on Friday.

Why It's Important?

The Simi Valley fire threatens densely populated areas, with over 10,000 homes evacuated and 3,500 more under evacuation warnings. The Santa Rosa Island fire, while in a less populated area, poses risks to the island's unique ecosystem. Air quality in Los Angeles and surrounding counties has deteriorated due to smoke from the Simi Valley fire, raising health concerns. The fires highlight the ongoing challenges of wildfire management in California, particularly during peak fire season.
